The Mission of the Office of Sallie Mae Oversight (OSMO) is to carry out the oversight charge of the Secretary of Treasury, as established by Congress, to monitor the financial safety and soundness of the Student Loan Marketing Association (SLMA), and to monitor compliance with certain statutory provisions. OSMO's mission is carried out through ongoing off-site analysis of the company as well as periodic on-site examinations. OSMO prepares an annual Report of Examination containing its findings, recommendations, compliance matters, and management responses.

As discussed further via the link Background on OSMO and Sallie Mae, SLMA was dissolved on December 29, 2004. It is anticipated that OSMO will be dissolved in 2006.
