Treasury's Open Government Plan Wins a Leading Practices Award for Participation and Collaboration
OMB announced on August 12, 2010 that Treasury is the recipient of a Leading Practices Award for achievement above and beyond the requirements of the Open Government Directive in the category of Participation and Collaboration. These Awards recognize those agencies, as selected by their peers, that have outlined the best and most innovative strategies for promoting open government over the next two years.

Treasury and HUD join to host Conference on the Future of Housing Finance – August 17, 2010
On Tuesday, August 17, 2010, the Obama Administration hold a Conference on the Future of Housing Finance at the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. This event will provide a forum for public input as the Administration continues its work developing a comprehensive housing finance reform proposal for delivery to Congress by January 2011. During the conference, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan will moderate panel discussions with a diverse group of experts about the critical issues surrounding housing finance reform. These panelists represent a cross-section of stakeholder groups with interests in the outcome of this reform process, including citizen advocacy groups, economists, investors, market researchers, originators, securitizers, servicers, and private mortgage insurers. The conference will also be webcast live at treasury.gov.

A Treasury Open Government Initiative:  www.PRAComment.gov
Treasury launched the first government site to collect public comments on the Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) information collection activities. The public spends more than 7.5 billion hours on paperwork related to Treasury’s information collection activities. Answering President Obama’s call for increased participation and collaboration on agencies’ decision-making, Treasury wants more public engagement on this PRA process through expanded use of social networking technologies to obtain public comments. So, in addition to using the Federal Register Notice, Treasury has opened www.PRAcomment.gov. The first form open for comment is the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(3)(c) of the Internal Revenue Code, for a tax-exempt status.

New Treasury Data posted to Data.gov
Treasury has posted three new data sets to Data.gov including daily data on what the states borrow from the Federal Government to pay unemployment benefits, data on the Trust Funds that Public Debt manages, which includes the Unemployment Trust Fund and the Highway Trust Fund, and Public Debt reports on loan transactions between Treasury and other federal agencies that borrow funds from Treasury to operate credit programs to loan or guarantee loans for nonfederal borrowers, such as small businesses, students, veterans, and farmers.

Meaningful Access to U.S. Currency Proposals for Public Comment
The Treasury Department and Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) issued a Federal Register notice to inform the public of the features that BEP intends to propose to the Secretary of the Treasury to accommodate people who are blind and visually impaired in denominating U.S. currency, and to solicit public comment on the proposed accommodations.  Public comments will be accepted through August 18, 2010.  Additionally, the BEP will host two open public forums on June 22, 2010 at their Washington, DC and Ft. Worth, TX facilities.  Read more.

Obama Administration Seeks Public Input on Reform of the Housing Finance System   
The Obama Administration released questions for public comment on the future of the housing finance system, including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the overall role of the federal government in housing policy. The Obama Administration seeks input in two ways:

  1. The public will have the opportunity to submit written responses to the questions published in the Federal Register online at www.regulations.gov. 
  2. The Administration intends to hold a series of public forums across the country on housing finance reform. 

Together these opportunities for input will give the public the chance to deepen the federal government's understanding of the issues and to shape the policy response going forward.
