George Wolfe was appointed Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Treasury Department in July 2001. As the Deputy General Counsel, he advises senior Treasury officials and oversees the activities of the 1800 lawyer Department Legal Division.
From 1984 to 2001, Mr. Wolfe was a partner in Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough, a 270 attorney firm headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina. His practice focused on corporate and governmental law, and he headed the firm's South Carolina corporate and economic development practices. Before joining Nelson, Mullins, he practiced in Washington, D.C. with Wilmer, Cutler, and Pickering (1978-1981) and Zuckerman, Spaeder, Goldstein, Taylor and Kolker (1981-1983).
In the early 1990s, Mr. Wolfe served the Bush Administration as a member of the Investment Policy Advisory Committee (INPAC), the principal private sector body advising the United States Trade Representative on inbound and outbound foreign investment issues. He was also active during the 1990s in developing economic development policies and legislation for the State of South Carolina.
Mr. Wolfe is a native of South Carolina. He graduated from Washington and Lee University, cum laude, in 1973. In 1977, he graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he was a member of the Law Review and Order of the Coif. In 1977-78, he clerked for the Honorable Donald Russell, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
