General Counsel’s Summer Intern Program

Summer Intern Program

The Department of the Treasury offers a volunteer summer intern program for law students.  Students selected as summer interns will work in Washington, D.C., in one of the following offices:

  • Assistant General Counsel for Banking and Finance
  • Assistant General Counsel for Enforcement and Intelligence
  • Assistant General Counsel for General Law, Ethics and Regulation
  • Assistant General Counsel for International Affairs
  • Office of Tax Legislative Counsel
  • International Tax Counsel
  • Benefits Tax Counsel
  • Chief Counsel, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau
  • Chief Counsel, Bureau of Engraving and Printing
  • Chief Counsel, Office of Financial Research
  • Chief Counsel, Office of Foreign Assets Control
  • Chief Counsel, United States Mint

These internships offer an opportunity to improve research and writing skills, to observe the practice of law in a major federal agency, and to learn about substantive areas of the law by dealing with issues faced by Treasury Department lawyers and their clients.  We expect a 10-week commitment from our summer interns.

The Treasury Department's Legal Division is committed to attracting candidates from diverse backgrounds and experiences with first-rate academic and professional credentials.  We seek candidates who possess a strong work ethic, demonstrate a genuine interest in the mission of the Treasury Department, exhibit a work attitude of cooperation, dedication, and integrity, and are comfortable working with and presenting views to senior lawyers and policymakers at the Treasury Department.  Treasury Department Legal Division interns must inspire confidence through substantive excellence, effective oral and written communication, critical analysis, and the exercise of good judgment.  We look for team builders with strong interpersonal skills who are adept at building positive relationships with clients and colleagues.

The application deadline for internships for the summer of 2017 is December 16, 2016.
