FOOTNOTES and NOTICES

  1. Short-term negotiable foreign securities and CDs are included in the banking claims data on this webpage.
    1. In section A above, the aggregated data for all foreigners show (1)  U.S. holdings of short-term securities and CDs (lines 8,27,41), and  (2) U.S. customers' holdings payable in dollars of (a) negotiable CDs (line 12), (b) short-term securities (line 13), and (c) commercial paper (line 14).
    2. In section B above, the country data do not breakout short-term securities and CDs.

  2. Data-Series Breaks and Other Changes:
    1. December 2013. Beginning with data as-of December 2013, the TIC reports underlying the monthly banking statistics on this webpage were redefined to include all financial firms. At the same time, the TIC report underlying the quarterly nonbank statistics was redefined to include only nonfinancial firms. To reflect the changes in coverage, the banking statistics were renamed the financial firm reported statistics, effective with the release on February 18, 2014, and the nonbank statistics were renamed the nonfinancial statistics, effective with the March 18, 2014 release.
      -- Effective with the monthly release of February 18, 2014, the reporting panel for the U.S. Financial Firms’ statistics on this webpage was increased to include nonbank financial firms that previously reported with nonbanks, beginning with the data as-of December 2013.
      -- Effective with the monthly release on August 15, 2014, the reporting panel for the U.S. Financial Firms’ statistics has been further expanded to include additional financial firms, beginning with the data as-of December 2013.
    2. 2008-2009: Effective with the data release on September 16, 2009, a number of institutions were reclassified in the TIC system as bank holding companies. These data reporters are now included in the monthly bank-reported statistics and are no longer reporting only quarterly as nonbanks. This change in reporter classification affects data going back to October 2008.
    3. Changes beginning with data as of February 2003.
