IRS IMPERSONATION SCAM REPORTING

If you are aware of fraud, waste, mismanagement, and abuse in the IRS programs and operations, report it to the TIGTA Hotline!

What kinds of things should you report?

Allegations of violations that impact the integrity of Federal tax administration and IRS programs. This includes allegations of misconduct by IRS employees.

Allegations of improprieties, false claims and fraud by outside contractors attempting to defraud the IRS by utilizing deceptive contract methods.

Allegations of identity theft where any individual (s) impersonated the IRS or an IRS employee or used words, letters, symbols, or IRS emblems to illegally obtain personal, confidential or private financial information.

Examples of specific allegations that should be reported include, but are not limited to: attempts by taxpayers to bribe IRS personnel; extortion or misuse of position by IRS personnel; assaults and/or threats by taxpayers against IRS employees; schemes involving the use of computer technology or mail that impersonate the IRS or IRS personnel; misconduct by tax practitioners (falsification of qualifications, theft of IRS tax remittances and theft of IRS tax refunds).

Please read before submitting a complaint:
  • Confidentiality and Privacy

  • TIGTA will not disclose the identity of a complainant unless the complainant consents to such disclosure or disclosure is unavoidable during the course of an inquiry.

  • You are not required to identify yourself when submitting a hotline complaint. If you choose to identify yourself, you may either request confidentiality or consent to the disclosure of your identity.

  • Anonymous Filing Status

  • If you submit your complaint anonymously, we will not know who you are, and we will not be able to contact you to request additional information. This may hinder our ability to investigate the information you provide.

  • Whistleblower Protection

  • Submitting a complaint may be a “protected communication” under Whistleblower Protection Laws. If you believe that there has been retaliation due to submitting a complaint, you may file a retaliation complaint.   • Discrimination Complaints

  • Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) complaints must be filed with your agency or service’s EEO office within the timeframes specified in applicable regulations. Your agency or service’s EEO office and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission can provide further information and guidance.
